Happy Hobbit Day 2025!!

Fellow hobbits, potatoes, and lovers of all things Middle-earth, the day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here… HOBBIT DAY 2025 has arrived! After a year that’s felt longer and heavier than a trek across Mordor, we potatoes are holding fast to the traditions that still bring us warmth, magic, and joy.

We know things feel different this year. Joy has felt harder to access. Anger and weariness seem to sit just under the surface. But that’s exactly why we need this day. That’s why we celebrate. Because in a world growing increasingly cruel and chaotic, choosing joy is a small form of resistance. Celebrating light in dark times is an important act. So we gather. We feast. We watch. We play. We remember what it feels like to breathe and to feel joy.

For those who are new to the holiday, Hobbit Day falls on September 22nd, in honor of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two of the most iconic, brave, and beloved hobbits in all of Middle-earth, who just so happen to share a birthday! We are celebrating it a touch early this year, but the day lands on Monday, which we all know is a tricky day in our capitalistic hellscape of a world. But we’re not letting that stop us! There is, (in our opinion) no better way to mark the occasion than by diving headfirst into the lush, epic, heartfelt world that J.R.R. Tolkien gave us!

We potatoes have been celebrating Hobbit Day every year since 2012, but our love for Middle-earth goes even further back to when we first saw the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings in theaters and read the books as children. Watching those legendary films on the big screen as wide-eyed kids was pure magic and each year we return to that feeling by celebrating Hobbit Day with a full-blown, potato-approved, joy-filled tradition!

As is our custom, we’ve been enjoying all kinds of fantastical tales this month during our annual Live Action Fantasy Month, but let’s be real, nothing compares to Tolkien. His stories, his world building, and the sheer power of his writing… they’re unmatched. Whether you're a lifelong fan or just dipping your toes into The Shire for the first time, The Lord of the Rings is worth every minute of your time.

So what are we doing for Hobbit Day 2025?

We’re sticking with our beloved traditions because honestly, this year, we need them more than ever.

An all-day Lord of the Rings marathon!
We’re talking full Extended Editions of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King uncut, and uninterrupted. These films are long, yes, but they are truly worth every second. Especially when you’re surrounded by good food, snuggly blankets, and loved ones.

Feasting like Hobbits!
Breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper, we’re doing what we can and keeping it cozy. A charcuterie board fit for a hobbit, lots of cheese, meats, homemade crusty bread, fresh fruit, and veggies. A homemade chicken later that would delight Samwise along with some PO-TA-TOES roasted underneath the chicken to collect those juices… delicious, other roasted vegetables, and some cherry pie to end the day. It doesn’t have to be elaborate at all, just comforting, joyful, and nourishing. Always do what works best for you and your celebration.

Homemade rosemary bread, rosemary crackers, various meats and cheeses, veggies, apples, mini muffins and Rose wine!

What would be on your Hobbit Day table? Do you have a favorite comfort food that fits the spirit?

Our roast chicken with herb butter, garlic, onions and spices on top of petite roasting PO-TA-TOES! We will also be roasting broccoli and cauliflower on a separate tray later!

Bringing back the legendary drinking game!
Our Lord of the Rings drinking game, “Drink ‘Til You’re in Middle-earth,” has been a staple of our Hobbit Day since the very first one. Like we said earlier, we’ve been using this drinking game for quite some time! It’s a favorite of ours and we only play it once a year, on Hobbit Day. Over the years, we’ve made a few minor adjustments to the rules, but we’re always open to suggestions! If you have any new ideas or tweaks, please drop them in the comments! Are there any rules you think should be added?

We’re still hoping to find the original creator, all we know is we first discovered it on a now-defunct Tumblr page called “Kyle’s Vault of Cool.” If you know who came up with it, please tell us so we can give proper credit! This game has brought us so many laughs and has truly helped keep the tradition alive.

As always, you can sip water, tea, soda, juice, whatever works for you. Drinking games don’t need to be about alcohol to be fun. They’re just a silly way to connect more deeply with the story, spot patterns, and engage in the films we love most!

Hobbit Day 2025 Itinerary (All extended editions):

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

In these trying times, we potatoes feel that Hobbit Day is more important than ever. It reminds us that joy can be found in the simplest things, a warm meal, a kind word, a deep breath, a soft blanket, a falling leaf. That’s the magic of hobbits. That’s the magic of this amazing story. They teach us that the world doesn’t need to be perfect to be worth saving. That hope can live in small comforts, and that even if the only good thing you can name today is a slice of pizza or a cup of coffee or tea… that’s enough. These stories remind us to keep going. That the world is still worth fighting for. And that hope, no matter how fragile, is the light we carry forward. For ourselves. For each other. For the future.

It’s not just a movie marathon, it’s a return to something familiar, something meaningful, and something that reminds us that hope is always something we can find if we look hard enough.

We know it can be hard to celebrate when the world feels so heavy. But Hobbit Day gives us permission to slow down. To embrace coziness, connection, and nostalgia. To remember that even the smallest person can change the course of the future. That community matters. That courage isn’t always loud.

So whether you’re watching with friends, curled up with your pet, or celebrating quietly on your own we potatoes hope this day brings you a little peace, a little fun, a little hope, a little magic, and a whole lot of second breakfast!

Cheers to Tolkien and the world he built! Cheers to hobbits, comfort, and stories that make us feel brave. And most of all, cheers to you! You’re still here. You’re still going. And you deserve joy, even now… especially now.

Happy Hobbit Day 2025!

May your heart be as full as your belly. May the road rise to meet you. And when all is said and done, may we cast this administration into Mount Doom, right where they belong.

Keep going. We’re with you. We will get through this together.
